Caring for Our Veterans
As an 80% disabled veteran, I have a number of personal stories about the unacceptable and disturbing conditions I’ve encountered within the Veteran Affairs system. My experiences are not unique to what thousands of brave Marylanders, that have selflessly served our nation in the Armed Forces, have been forced to deal with.
When serving as an enlisted United States Marine – and later as a Cryptologic Naval Officer – I came across countless people that put their lives on the line. Our veterans have given so much to defend our country, yet Washington politicians continue to fail them. As your Congressman, I’ll fight to make sure our veterans receive the care our country promised.
“My top priority is to ensure that our veterans always receive the benefits they have earned and deserve."
Besides funding research to treat combat injuries sustained, I will ensure we fight back against a known silent killer: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). With nearly 22 veterans committing suicide daily, I believe it is Congress’s responsibility to counter this disturbing trend by recruiting the best mental health professionals to provide alternatives.
Having been treated at a number of Maryland veteran hospitals, I will work with other members of Congress to propose the following solutions:
- reduce administrative errors through utilizing technology;
- create a Congressional Oversight Taskforce to perform routine facility inspections;
- renovate hospitals to become state-of-the-art environments; and,
- incentivize skilled doctors to practice within the VA hospital system.
I’ll work to bring accountability back to the VA and promise to rebuild veterans’ trust in government. My top priority is to ensure that our veterans always receive the benefits they have earned and deserve.
